Nijmegen-based composer and singer Lotte Melief (also known as Lotte Janssen) is coming to Merleyn in January for the release party of her new album, “Weave”. She invites the audience into a deeply personal journey of loss, vulnerability, and healing. It is not resistance, but rather the acceptance of what lies beyond her control, that creates space for emotional depth.
On the album “Weave”, Melief navigates the realms of jazz, improvisation, and art-folk. Featuring layered vocal harmonies, viola, double bass, and subtle percussion, the music creates a warm, hushed soundscape that shifts between intimate whispers and moments of blossoming openness.
The lead single, ‘July’s Hymn’, marks the beginning of a musical cycle Melief composed during a period of mourning. It was only two years after recording the track that she felt ready to listen to it again, a moment that sparked the creation of “Weave”.
Singing with others has long played a central role in Melief’s musical life. She studied vocals in Brussels and The Hague, won the Jong Werk Music Prize at the Festival Theater aan Zee with her vocal project “One Bird Orchestra”, and has performed in a jazz trio.
